On Missing PIE

July, 2021

Shem Oirere,

Attending the 2019 Parking Industry Expo in Chicago was a real eye-opener for me, in more ways than one. Gaining a clear understanding of how technology is transforming the North American and European parking industry gave me a new perspective on the existing, but untapped, potential of Africa’s parking business.

I looked forward to the 2020 PIE with high hopes of getting an opportunity to share with other participants the emerging trends in Africa’s parking market.

I realized, from the many events I attended during the show, how similar the structure, challenges and opportunities in the parking industry are, regardless of whether one is in Africa, North America, Europe or Asia - save for the population of cars, I guess.

I looked forward to the 2020 PIE with high hopes of getting an opportunity to share with other participants the emerging trends in Africa’s parking market, and what, mostly likely, binds the continent’s parking market with the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, Covid-19 shattered these hopes, although I had a feeling that, after all, in another 365 days, I would have an opportunity to attend in 2021. This, regrettably is not going to happen. Covid-19, like a new technology, has become a disruptor, not only of the beautiful PIE events, but of any plans by international participants to engage with industry professionals on the latest in the market and talk over what comes next for car owners and operators of parking facilities.

So, in short, I’ll not be attending the 2021 PIE. This is because Covid-19 and those who regulate what should and should not be done when the virus is still ‘in the air’ believe international travel should be limited as a containment measure.

I had looked forward to enjoying 2021 PIE’s, insightful seminars, powerful presentations, speed networking sessions, and, yes, the networking breakfasts, oh! and the invite-only reception, all now off the table for me.

I only have three prayer requests: a successful 2021 PIE for those privileged to attend, including the entire organizing crew; an end to the so-called new normal (not sure this will be answered); and finally, to seeing you all at the 2022 PIE! Keep on keeping safe!

Sincerely, Shem
