EDC Corp. recently completed on-site installation and training for its AIMS parking management system at the University of Nebraska-Kearney; North Georgia College and State University (Dahlonega); the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the State University of New York at Oswego; and the University of Alabama-Huntsville. These new installations will manage their online permit and ticket sales, along with departmental back-office management and financial system updates. EDC provides hosting services as well as client self-hosting of its AIMS products.

Paul Lutey, based in the Portland, OR, office of NelsonNygaard, has been named Principal by the company. He specializes in all elements of transit service planning, including feasibility studies, service evaluations and community outreach. The company also named San Francisco-based Brian Canepa as Principal. Cubic Transportation Systems has received an extension to its support services contract from the LA County Metropolitan Transportation Agency for the components of the fare collection system that’s the foundation of the regional contactless smartcard branded as TAP.  The increase in contract value is approximately $9 million.

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) honored High Concrete Group, based in Denver, PA, at its 50th annual PCI Design Awards (www.pci.org). The company’s architectural precast concrete walls, for a complex at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, claimed the top prize in the military structures category.

The city of Bellingham, WA, recently switched over its two garages from high-pressure sodium and mercury-vapor lighting systems to fluorescent lighting, cutting consumption by two-thirds, said Norman Pendergraft, CPP. “This new lighting, visually, seems a bit brighter on certain locations, causing concern for neighboring structures, but the added light spilling out is but only an additional security measure.”

Philips has appointed Bruno Biasiotta, a building-efficiency leader with 20-plus years of experience, to head its North American lighting operations. He will be responsible for driving market share for the company’s lighting businesses in North America.

Rachel Yoka, VP of Strategic Business Planning & Sustainability for Timothy Haahs & Associates, has been named to the Board of Directors of the  US Green Parking Council. As a committee chair, she had guided development of its Green Garage Certification Program.

Ticketech, an industry leader in revenue control products and services for the valet/attended segment of the parking industry, recently entered into a long-term agreement with Icon Parking Systems to upgrade to its Ultra platform at all of Icon’s more than 200 locations in New York City.

Brush Industries and Q-Card have hired Jeffrey J. Myers as their new Director of Sales and Marketing. His expertise with the electronics and semiconductor industries began at Lunaire Ltd., where he was Marketing Manager.

McCarthy Building Companies was recently awarded a $72.7 million contract for construction of a 520,000-square-foot regional transportation center and 19-foot-high walkway at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, CA. Partnering with Choate Parking Consultants, the firm also is constructing an $11.5 million design-build 677-space, 214,983-square-foot parking structure at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, CA.  Completion is set for next winter.

Timothy Haahs, PE, AIA, President and CEO of Timothy Haahs & Associates, was recently selected by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett as one of 17 members of his new Asian American Affairs Advisory Commission. The importance of this committee presented itself through the vast population of the state’s more than 300,000 Asian Pacific American citizens. In other company news, the Red Rose Transit Authority (RRTA), led by Executive Director David Kilmer, celebrated the opening of its Queen Street Station mixed-use facility in downtown Lancaster, PA, in late May. TimHaahs designed the $19.6 million RRTA facility, which includes 395 parking spaces and accommodates three bus bays serving the station’s 11 operating bus routes.

Wireless Carpark has announced ParkTrak Inc. of Spokane, WA, as a certified reseller of its cloud-based event parking revenue control system, which provides strict audit controls and global reporting for flat-rate parking operations. Both companies use the same Intermec handheld devices for their mobile parking operations, making it possible for ParkTrak clients to run multiple parking applications from one device. 

 PayLock IPT has unveiled its proprietary digital parking permits system, which dramatically enhances the way in which municipal and university parking permit programs are used and managed. In May, the Revenue Authority of Prince George’s County, MD, contracted with PayLock to implement a digital permit system. The company says this revolutionary new service will enable residents to apply, be granted approval, and receive their parking permits online or over the phone in a matter of minutes, 24 hours a day.

Digital Payment Technologies (DPT), Concord Parking and Genetec have initiated a holistic license-plate-enabled parking (LEP) solution at Central City Shopping Centre in Surrey, BC, Canada. DPT’s Luke II paystations are central to the LEP solution that Concord is introducing. This new parking system, which uses the license plate number as the key identifier, is designed to enable more efficient enforcement and management, while making parking easy for consumers.

 ParkMe has launched a free iPhone app that allows users in central Austin, TX, to find real-time availability of garage and street parking. The city is the first market to launch the app. “Austin is experiencing rapid growth, which in turn increases the demand for on-street parking in our central core,” said Steve Grassfield, the city’s Parking Enterprise Manager. The new mobile parking payment service from Parkmobile USA has been implemented in Oakland, CA. Customers can now pay with their cellphone using the company’s native mobile apps for the iPhone, Android, Windows 7 and BlackBerry smartphones anywhere in the city. They also can choose to pay with NFC-enabled mobile phones by waving or tapping their phone on any of Parkmobile’s NFC-enabled stickers.
